Is Tourism in Mexico really that bad?

Im going on vacation to mexico city. what is the best kept secret tourism excursion in mexico city?

  • of course i am going to see the pyramids and the museum of anthropology and all the obvious tourist hot spots. but what is your favorite spot in the environs (or downtown) of mexico city that you think is under the tourism radar?

  • Answer:

Its kind of hard to find a place under the tourism radar in Mexico City, but I recommend that you go the Bazaar del Sábado. There are many things to buy, art, handcrafts, etc., and you can have breakfast there. Also you can go and take a walk in Coyoacán, there you can go to see the man that makes figures with the pancake flour, he is famous. He can make a pancake with your profile and the you eat it, ha ha. Its kind of fun.

Travel Yahoo has a good list of things to do, Click below. I recommend Bazaar Sabado in San Angel (south part of th city) on Saturday morning is great for art and crafts. Also as you stand in the zocalo facing the cathedral, the building on the left is the National Pawn Shop--they have some amazing thing in there.

Definitely take a boat (trajinera) ride at Xochimilco. Spend an afternoon leisurely (unless it's a weekend or holiday) floating along the canals where you can have lunch served to you from ladies preparing them on a grill in their canoe, and mariachis or trios will serenade you. For a fascinating look at Mexico's religious life, check out the Basilica de Guadalupe. You'll find devout pilgrims inching their way across the concrete on their knees to give thanks to the Virgin (be sure to look upon the cloak of St. Juan Diego inside) and then spend time in the beautiful garden. For art, definitely go to Coyoacan and visit the house of Frida Kahlo as well as the Museo de Dolores Olmedo. For night life, listen to the mariachis in Plaza Garibaldi (travel safely here!) or many of the clubs around the historic center.
