What is Mexico City like to visit?

• I have heard the negative things, such as it being big, crowded and smoggy, but what are the good things? What does Mexico City have to offer a discerning, culture-seeking backpacker?

  I have been living in Mexico City for 18 years and still discover new things not only in the whole city, but even in the relatively tiny area of the Historical Center. There is street art, more museums than most any city in the world (and all free on sundays! all closed on mondays!), a variety of neighborhoods that each have their own flavor and rhythm. It was the birthplace of the Mexica culture, this curious and powerful amalgam that flourished in the middle of a swamp in a huge fertile valley that had been populated since caveman days (Teotihuacan, the third tallest pyramid in the world, was created 7 centuries before the Aztecs ever stumbled upon this area and settled here, to become the Mexica). This is a valley 2500 meters over sea level, surrounded with over 2000 volcanos (only one still active). Apart from the prehispanic remains, it was the center of the colonial empire and still is an area that concentrates tremendous activity in all aspects of the economy, politics, and social movements. And there are inexpensive places to stay, both in the Historical Center and in other more quiet, green places like Colonia Roma. I love Mexico City!!!
