Where do all cold and warm ocean currents originate?

Are the ocean currents to strong to swim in the ocean in Cancun?

  • I am staying at the Hilton, which is located at km 17 and I've been reading reviews from tourists that you can't swim in the water b/c of the currents. Is this true? This hotel is located towards the bottom portion of the 7 shape of the island. Should I stay in a different area? Are the currents less strong in the northern part of the island. Please advise! Thanks!

As the other answerer said Cancun is the city and the area you are staying in is called the Isla de Cancun and is also referred to as the "Hotel Zone" or the "7". The Blvd. Kukulcan runs the entire length of the isla marked by kilometers and Hilton as you said is at marker 17. We are for the most part protected by a breaker which runs the entire coast of Quintana Roo. This breaker is in part the reason for the gorgeous beaches. Although in front of the Hilton the breaker is farther out and the waves can be bigger and if you venture out the current may pull you north. I spoke to the Hilton today and they informed me that do not have protected swim areas like we do here in Playa del Carmen, where we have no tides and very peaceful waters, but there are lifeguards who are on duty in front of the hotel. They advised me that they also have several swimming pools. Now is it calmer farther north? Along the isla it is about the same except for the most northern point along marker 5, 6 and 7. Unless you are planning to swim out for a distance you will be fine. At times the waves can get a little strong for little ones but for a refreshing swim not a problem. Hope this helps. If you got another question just ask as there are several people here who are experts on vacationing in and around Cancun. You may contact me directly if you would like additional information. I live in Playa del Carmen and have so for the past 12 years. Your question was about swimming , yes? Did you want to throw an anchor? No I did not think so.. If you want to throw an anchor then ask the other answerer they seem to know more. Or better yet I will give you a link to the high and low tides. Tide Tables High Tide Low Tide Time Height Time Height Fri Tide Set One 08:50 AM 0.59 ft 02:52 AM 0.07 ft Tide Set Two 09:12 PM 0.62 ft 02:55 PM 0.03 ft <td align="lef That seems like .04 of a foot differnce. But I am sure you were asking about swimming. ¿Yes?

Hola, I have been living in Cancun for 10 years and I agree with what everyone said for the most part. I have never gone swimming anywhere in the area and felt that I was in danger. In most hotels the lifeguard posts a flag everyday and the color of the flag indicates the strength of the waves/currents. Don't ever go swimming drunk, this is where many people run into problems. You will be doing plenty of swimming! Have a great time!

Ocean currents in the area are not strong but they are consistent. The only time you would have to worry about swimming in the ocean is in the off season when tropical storms and hurricanes influence the strength and intensity of the ocean of course. Their have only been a few drownings in the Cancun area and recently on on the island of Cozumel. Cancun's waters are safe to swim and not really strong enough to surf. There are no rip tides or any other ocean activity to be concerned with unless, as I say during Storm Season. I am sure you know that Cancun is a City located on the Yucatan Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo Mexico and I am sure you know where you are staying. The current flows from the Caribbean past Cancun and into the Gulf of Mexico and then forms a " Loop Current " as you recall from the news covering the Oil Spill. BTW the other answerer says there are "No Tides" I could provide you with a link but almost everyone knows that all Oceans have TIDES...High and Low. In fact you have to be careful in what depth you throw anchor or you will find you sailboat listing and taking on water. No tides lol..lol

Have you got the right place? Cozumel is the island, Cancun is a peninsula. At certain seasons (spring tides) and times of the tide, there is quite a strong current and a bit of undertow. It is the Atlantic after all. Time you swimming for full or low tide. Ask one of the lifeguards when you get there.
