Is there a Walmart in Acapulco?

Is it safe for tourists to drive from Mexico City to Acapulco?

  • I'm from Norway and planning a trip to Mexico this summer. I'll be arriving at Mexico City airport and considering renting a car and driving to Acapulco. However, reading Lonely Planet - both Mexico City and Acapulco seems to have their fair share of problems with crime and violence (kidnappings etc). In Acapulco tourists are told it is safer to stay at the beaches (and not go inlands) ... but when driving to the city I guess I'll be going through these areas... And watching the news (just now) I saw a story from Acapulco where a major drug fight had found place and a lot of people were arrested .. heh I understand that these drugwars very seldom involve bystanders but .. So my quesiton is - how dangerous is it for a (white, that is obviosuly a..) tourist to drive from Mexico City to Acapulco. Are there any precausions one should take?

  • Answer:

Take the bus. Tolls on that highway will cost you $60+us and driving in Mexico City and Acapulco is a major pain. Direct threats to tourists are way overblown. If that concerned, maybe avoid Mexico altogether

Forget about the danger, you will be safe. Car rentals in Mexico are expensive, driving in Mexico City from the airport to the toll road is difficult and not well marked, you will not need a car in Mexico City or Acapulco and the tolls are expensive. Bus service in Mexico is inexpensive, safe and comfortable. Take a bus from Mexico City to Acapulco and enjoy your trip without the hassles of driving.

NOOOOO its NOt safe there are tons of problems in both places.first its not only about drug war its also the thugs that don't have money they sell organs to europe also they rob people in the high way and the police are very crooked they also want a cut of the pie don't drive

There are many Europeans and Americans who live in Mexico and many Mexicans that look like tourists who live in Mexico. The problem here I think is the driving. In order to dare and drive in Mexico city you have to know the city, there aren't many signals, the traffic is crazy, and you don't want to end up lost in a dangerous zone. Also the roads to Acapulco are not easy to drive, too many trailers. I would recommend you take a Bus, there are many first class buses, very comfortable, and safer.

As a Mexico city dweller, I can say that in fact it isn't the best idea to drive here (especially not for a scandinavian). Acapulco is way calmer but still full of Mex city dwellers most of the time, so let's say it's a smaller version of Mex city. Driving between the 2 places is safe as long as you take the toll highway, not the free one. I agree with the 2 posters above me, the warnings about lack of safety and people being killed by drug cartels in bunches are way too exaggerated. As sparks said, if you're so afraid then don't come. I guess that only going to dangerous cities such as Tijuana or Juarez would entitle more danger, but the central part of the country is ok.

This is not the time to visit Mexico, in some areas the drug lords have taken control, and a tourist in a rental car is a potential target, You are used to a world of law and order, much of Mexico is too disfunctional to promise you that safety. I would fly between the two cities, or maybe take your holiday somewhere else and save Mexico for when things get better
