Does anyone have Celiac Disease?

Anyone with celiac disease have any international travel tips?

  • I have celiac disease which means I can't eat a speck of wheat, barley or malt products (gluten). I have to be really careful; a lot of processed food such as soy sauce or chicken stock has wheat in it, and wheat fillers and malt flavouring is really common, at least in North America. Does anyone with any food allergies or intolerances have experience traveling, for long periods of time where you can't just bring all your own food? I am especially wondering about travelling in South America - is it feasible to cook all your own food or can you safely survive eating cheap food off the street stands/meals provided by tour companies, and how many people understood when you asked for gluten/dairy/nut...-free food and were able to comply?
