What are the best and the worst areas of Buenos Aires?

I'm an american and am thinking about moving to Buenos Aires,Argentina?

  • Can soemone give me information on how to live in another country for a year? How to find work and what a resonable cost of living is in Buenos Aires?. I have two small children and would like to stay in a good area. What are the good areas, cost of living?. I will be on a budget so it needs to be reasonable. Any information is helpful....About schools also, how do I get my kids in schools there? There don't speak Spanish....

First answerer gave you great advice. Getting a work permit is nearly impossible unless you are highly educated and skilled in an area in which they need workers. Spanish is not the language of Brazil...Portuguese is...looks like you have a lot of studying to do. Sending your kids to school...would be expensive...even public schools would charge a fee to non-citizens...and if you need a bilingual private school..more expensive.

Hola ST - I live in BsAs area since 1993 - very happy here - My wife is a native of Buenos Aires. Just had problems with banking late 2001, early 2002 - but ok now... Good areas would be Recoleta, Palermo, Barrio Norte, Olivos... I live in the suburbs - San Isidro - Kids can learn Spanish in 3 to 6 months when in "full immersion" Just put them in regular schools, not in these "private schools" - Getting a job might not be easy for you - Takes a permanent visa/DNI. check http://www.baexpats.org/ - a forum with a lot of info - Best regards

You can't just "move" to another country for a year. You have to obtain a visa. In this case, you would need a "work permit". In order to get a work permit, you need to have an employer in Argentina sponsor your work permit. (That means, you have to find the job HERE before you go THERE). Once you've found the job, the work permit application needs to be processed (anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months on average). Now, you're ready to move for a year. Alternatively, you can form your own Argentine company and hire yourself (yes, you have to hire yourself), pay for your own work permit, apply and wait the same 6 weeks to 6 months.

well, to be honest I don't recommend it to you. I'm currently living in BsAs and it's a nice city but lots of problems. traffic, insecurity, lot of garbage and pollution. And don't forget all the financial issues. In my opinion Brazil is a better option, Brazilians are very charismatic, kind and nice. If you are looking something like BsAs Chile is much better economically talking.
