Study abroad- VALPARAISO, CHILE or BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA?

Should I go to Santiago, Chile or Buenos Aires, Argentina?

  • I was wondering where would be best, in mid-November, which one is more affordable, which one more safe....safety is an issue for me. -which one is better for an english speaker? -i'll be there for about 10-12 days. - if i go to Buenos Aires, I'll probably pop by Montevideo....is that a good idea, same questions apply to Montevideo ( english, safety, prices etc...) Thanks. this is kinda urgent i need to book my trip asap. my intrests include, photography and shopping, urban deisgn and architecture to name a few,,,,, thx

  • Answer:

I would go to both. Both are modern and beautful, but yes Santiago is more pricier than BA. There are ferries and also short hopper flights (about 30 minutes in flight) from Jorge Newberry Airport in BA to both Punta del Este and Montevideo. Santiago has amazing mountain vistas. They have a diverse population as I saw many East Indians, Asians, and some Middle Eastern people living and working there.

I have lived in both cities. So here goes. Buenos Aires is more affordable. Santiago is much safer and cleaner than Buenos Aires. You are less likely to get conned in Santiago. Overall, Buenos Aires is your best bet, as going by your interests, it ticks all the right boxes. There is so much more to see and do there. Minuses for Buenos Aires are that it's quite a dirty city, not helped by dog owners who do not clean up after their dogs ( there is a lot of dogs), and leave the excrement on the pavements (sidewalks).

Chile is expensive, go to BA, Montevideo is cool for a weekend, read my stories. Yes it is safe.

Santiago is richer and more modern, but Buenos Aires is beautiful and historic. The people are also better looking in Buenos Aires. I would go to Buenos Aires, but both are good options. If you can do Montevideo then Buenos Aires is better option. All 3 cities are generally safe, but always have to use street smart, like any large city in the US.

I would say Santiago is safer, but not as exciting. Buenos Aires has more history and culture to it imo. If architecture and stuff is your thing then I would def say BA, it just seems more like what a city is made of and the buildings are beautiful. For English they are on the same level. Go to the richer areas of either city and you'll be fine. the Montevideo thing sounds fun, I wanted to do that too but didnt have enough time or money (it was way more expensive than I was expecting). If you dont speak english make sure you go through a reputable company. I was looking at buqebus (sp?) Oh, BA is cheaper...I def agree with the others on that!
