Which should I travel to. Salvador or Iguassu Falls?

Some questions about travel to brazil and argentina?

  • First of all does anyone know when Carnival takes place in 2012? Also, I'm thinking of starting my adventure in Manaus but hope to be in Salvador by Carnival. I want to travel by land and water through Brazil and go from Manaus to Salvador and then to Belo Horizonte which is where some good friends live. From there I hope to journey on to Rio or Sao Paolo and then to Iguassu Falls and on to Buenos Aires, possibly Bariloche, and eventually Ushaia, Argentina all by land as well. I already looked into flights so what I do need help with is looking into bus fares or other fares (ferry or riverboat?) to make this adventure a reality. I'm a 31 y.o. female that is strongly considering this journey alone. How safe is it? I hear Rio is dangerous but many also recommend that a trip to Brazil is incomplete without a stay in Rio. I'm thinking of staying in hostels or if that's not ideal budget hotels. I want to go on an adventure but hope I make it back home too!

Hey Ginger, I'm a travel writer and I have done your trip backwards, your itinerary sounds great. To get from Manaus to Salvador you can either fly or you can boat the amazon, which is 3 days and about 60$, to Belem. From there you can fly to Salvador or bus, honestly, if you book now the flights are cheaper than the bus and the bus is about 48 hours. If you want to break up a bus trip maybe think about staying in Olinda near Recife before Salvador. The buses in Brazil are expensive and cost about 100$ for every 24 hours on the bus. Patagonia is brilliant, and although you'll be late in the season it's still very nice. I recommend booking flights from Bariloche to Ushuaia as the bus trip is long, boring and expensive. Anyways. I have lots of info on the area on my website if you want have a look there's articles. Also, I'm working on putting together some guides at the moment which have some recommended places to stay. Best of luck

Im from Argentina, you CAN´T do the trip by land !! you know that Salvador is in North America and Usuahia is the southest city in the world? You´ll do the trip in 1 year. I would recommend you to take a plane from Salvador to Brasil. Sorry for my English and Good Luck!

I'm Brazilian and currently live in Texas. Your itinerary sounds fantastic I would just do as much reaserch as possible before going including its geography and culturally. Brazil is not any different than most countries in Europe or even USA in terms of violence and crime. For instance I would never drive alone through some streets of LA due to the increased gang activity there. You need to know where you are going and where to avoid. Northern Brazil is pretty safe for the most part but Rio and Sao Paulo could be risky if you don't know your where abouts. I would avoid crowed places wearing expesive jewelry or expensive cloths. Pick pocketing is something very common along the biggest cities where there are lots of people close together like train stations and bus stops. I would ask the hotel about the area and the places you need to avoid. Always ask more than one person. Most people are scared of the favelas in rio, I would avoid by all costs. It's common to find the police going against the drug dealers where you could find yourself in between the fire range. But other than that Brazil is a marvelous place. Beautiful people, very welcoming and friendly. I'm planning a trip from Sao Paulo to Bariloche in July where I will be stopping at I guazu falls and I camt wait. Good luck and if you have more questions shoot me an email through here.
