What are the best things to do while in South America (Colombia, Peru, Brazil, etc.)?
-
I am a 24 year old (US citizen) traveling independently to South America (flying from the UK), planning to stay there for at least 2 months (between June and September) and will start my journey from Brazil. 1) What are the top places I must visit and things to do (treks/adventure/nature,etc.) and where to stay? 2) What is the best way to travel from and within each country? 3) Also, are there some good places to learn surfing? Many thanks South American travelers for your ideas and suggestions on this trip.

Answer:
If you've never been before then these are some of the must-see / do hightlights: Brazil / Argentina - Igauazu falls Boliva - Salar de uyuni (salt flats) Peru - Inca trail / Macchu Picchu Ecuador - amazon rainforest trekking Galapagos Islands (although pricey!) Columbia - Cartegena The list is actually endless as there is so so much to see and do. Travel on buses mainly. Although if you are short of time then you may want to consider flying. Stay in hostels and posadas - you will meet other travellers then. If you don't speak Spanish then would recommend you try to learn a bit before you go. The only place I surfed was Costa Rica - but thats not very helpful if you aren't planning to travel up to central america. 2 months is not a long time to see a whole continent so suggest you read up and plan carefully to make sure you make the most of it. Perhaps you might just want to pick a couple of countries that you are most interested in and concentrate on them. Good luck with it all.

you should try and stay through early january! in colombia you have to go to the carnivals in cali, bogota, pasto. take a bus its cheaper and safe. but if its long distance go on a plane more expensive but faster cartagena is good place to surf, lots of americas you can mingle with :)
