What do you need to get a US Passport?

When loosing your passport in Colombia what do you need to get back to the US?

  • A friend who traveled to Colombia called my husband and told him that he lost his passport and needs for us to send him his Baptismal Certificate, Birth Certificate, Confirmation Certificate. Should we be concerned or are these the documents that he would need to get back to the US?

  • Answer:

No. In Colombia there should be a U.S. Embassy who is opened to the public so that they can report their passport stolen and have it replaced by them. I do not remember how much it is to have the Embassy to issue it to you but it shouldn't be that expensive.

There is not to be concerned but if your friend doesn't have his passport because it was lost or stolen, then he has 10 calendar days to report it to the local passport authorities back in the United States such as the U.S. Postal Service Passport Department.

The basic answer is he needs a new passport, so they may be asking for these things to issue a new one. Where is your friend from? The U.S. embassy doesn't usually ask for these things unless they have no proof he is from the U.S. Normally all you need is a picture ID which can include a photo copy of your passport. If they are asking for the birth certificate he may have lost all forms of identification and didn't make a copy of his passport. If you are worried that it is some kind of scam, you can always email or call the U.S. embassy or consulate in Colombia.

No, those aren't the documents that you need. The Birth Certificate maybe, but why would the consulate need a proof of baptism and confirmation for a new passport? The US we doesn't care if you're baptized or what your religion is. The only thing that I can think is maybe he wants to get married there or take part in another religious ceremony that would require them.

He probably lost all forms of I.D. and needs those other certificates as proof of I.D. Send them by Fed-ex...not the mail. The mail would take weeks to get there. the American embassy there can give hm a new passport with proper I.D.
