My usa bank said it takes out 2 percent of exchage rate. What does that mean?

Hello. I talked to my bank and they said whatever i get from the exchange rate in another country that they get 2 percent. So is that 2 percent every time i get money out of the atm or just on a monthly basis? So how much does my bank keep from what I get out a month? How can i make sure they dont take too much?
