What do you know about FARC?

Colombia, cocaine, and FARC?

  • I am doing a school project on Colombia and need to know about the cocaine trade and FARC. Some of my questions include; 1. It was my understanding that FARC is in charge of the bulk cocaine trade...is this correct? If not, who controls the lot of the trafficking? 2. How strong is FARC and do you think that it will disband, or be defeated by the government any time soon? 3. What is the difference between the cartels and FARC? 4. Anything else? Thanks so much, and I have the highest respect for Colombia and don't see it as the world's drug capital but as a beautiful , awesome country full of awesome people. I hope to visit the beautiful country someday, and Juanes is the best.

    1- Yes. They move most of the Coke in Colombia. 2- No real estimations, and it is getting weaker. Las Farc started out in the 60s as a marxist political movement and developed into a bloodthirsty group responsible for thousands of murders and kidnappings. They will probably be more disbanding through attrition than anything else. The leadership of Las Farc, for the most part is aging. 3- Cartels, Las Farc, Thugs, Gangstas - All diff names for the same thing. 4- Colombian people are wonderful and less than 1% support Las Farc. Keep Uribe in office.

1. They control most of the trafficking, it's their financial means for arms and stuff. 2. It used to be pretty strong, but since president Uribe came to office he's been in a military battle against them, and the national army has killed some of their most important leaders, some have been sent in "extradition" to jails in the US 3. Cartels are mainly formed by civilians who chose the drug world, Farc are a querilla group who also traffics cocaine an other drugs. I'm glad you have an open perspective of our country. It is beautiful, you should def. come sometime.
