I want to go to Venezuela for a week to visit a friend. Is it ok to travel to Venezuela?

It's reasonably safe. Just keep a hand on you belongings at all times, and don't wander off into the jungle.

I'm not an expert, but it seems that Venezuela is okay. Go to www.state.gov. There is all kinds of info about foreign travel, embassy locations, etc. Hopefully, you have your passport. It can take quite a long time to get it. You can apply at the post office.

It's OK for you to come because you will be with natives. It's more dangerous if you are traveling alone. be careful and don't trust strangers.

There is an obvious hatred of Chavez towards any american person but it more on a political level. If you are visiting a friend I dont see any problem of you going to Venezuela. I'm sure you will not have a sign on yout tshirt saying "I'm american" and things like that! Just stay calm, read what the US gov recommends about Venezuela but the hatred is on a political level, you are not threatened at all as a person. My advise would be to talk to your friend and ask them if they consider you going there safe and where would you go, which places would you visit and keep an eye open for pickpocketers as you would in any part of the world anyway.

As long as you stay close to your friend and try to not go around looking like a tourist (carrying a map or things of the sort) you should be fine. Also, try not to wear anything expensive looking around the streets (watches, earrings...) but again, if you go with someone who knows the country you should be just fine :) Hope you go, and enjoy yourself!
