It was a short lived skirmish resulting in the overthrow of the Gen. Manuel Noriega Regime. Panama no longer has a standing army after the invasion, and General Noriega is still in prison. The US did hand over the Panama Canal after the Torrijos-Carter treaty expired in 1999, an act that Noriega said the US wanted to overturn. On December 31, 1999 the US officially handed over control of the Panama Canal. It was built by the US in the early 1900s and was administered by US personnel. It was a hard fought for prize that Panama argued with the US for decades. Today Panama has a booming economy and they are constructing a new set of canal locks that will handle the largest of today's ocean going ships.
