Where could I find volunteer (or paid, hopefully) work in Guatemala/Hondi, etc for the summer months?
-
I'm really hoping to get some experience in humanitarian work in those areas (or anywhere in southern-central america). If money is possible, that's great, obviously, but it's not really necessary. I'm a math/computer science/business student, too. Thanks for the help!

Hello Python, Great to hear you are interested in doing some humanitarian work and especially in Guatemala! I've been involved in projects in Guatemala for the last 15 years. Below are some of my favorite projects and contact info where appropriate. Good luck, be safe and have fun! Rose Education Foundation They have 3 schools in Guatemala teaching a wide range of ages. My wife was a volunteer English instructor at their school in Chimaltenango earlier this year and loved it - our 4 gringo children even attended school here for several months and absolutely loved it. The director down here is Julio Salazar ([email protected]) and he speaks perfect English / Spanish in case you have any questions. The director for Rose in the United States is Nisha Riggs ([email protected]) who can provide all the latest volunteer opp information and answer any questions you might have about the school or Guatemala living in general. The website for the Rose education foundation is http://www.roseeducation.org . Casa de Sion An orphanage that has evolved to offer community feeding programs, health education and more. A great project that is now located in Godinez near Lake Atitlan. Vicki Dalia is the founder and passionate about what she does - she would love to discuss volunteer opportunities with anyone interested - she can be reached at [email protected] and her blog is located at http://casadesion.blogspot.com/ Namaste Guatemala If you are interested in micro credit then this is a great fit. They have their offices inside the gated apartments in Antigua where I am currently living. According to their website, "NamasteDirect is committed to alleviating poverty in rural communities of Guatemala and southern Mexico by providing impoverished women entrepreneurs with microcredit loans along with a personal business mentor, vocational training workshops and informal business education.". More info can be found visiting their website at http://www.namaste-direct.org
