When is the best time to visit Rio?

Crewing a Boat in Rio Dulce?

  • Hello all, I'm in a home-grown Alaskan girl roaming through Central America, currently in Nicaragua and considering going north to visit Guatemala for a while. I've been down here in Centro for a couple months and so far my trip has been quite well, but I'm not sure what I want to do next. So here comes my question: In the Lonely Planet Central America on a Shoestring guide, in the 'working' section of Guatemala, it mentions that "Rio Dulce is place to go if you're looking to crew on a boat around the Caribbean or north to the states." Can people actually do this? Or does anyone know anything about crewing a boat from Rio Dulce to the states? This sounds like it would be an awesome opportunity to spend quality time working on Caribbean seas and a fun way to get back to the states. Are there many boats in Rio Dulce seeking crew members? And would they need only people who are very experienced working on boats?? I don't have a lot of boat work experience, but I'm a quick learner and strong (ex-skier). I'd appreciate any feedback, ideas, or bits of advice that you could offer. Thanks!

  • Answer:

The few boats on Rio Dulce rarely go anywhere. If you want to go to the US, your best best is to wait until Spring, and try to get the island of Antigua, in the Caribbean, just before race week in April.
