Where and how to report overstaying tourist?

Penalty for overstaying tourist card by 10 days in El Salvador?

  • I am leaving El Salvador in a week and I have overstayed my tourist card by ten days and I cannot go to the Embassy for an extension so I was wondering what is the fine for overstaying?

  • Answer:

It depends on the mood of the immigration officer you will deal with but it is usually a monetary fine. Up to a hundred dollars. I doubt very much that you will go to jail. Some people even stay illegally on purpose after their card expires, claiming the fine is easier and cheaper than renewing the visa.

I sure hope you like third world jails because you are going to get to see the inside of one... for just a YEAR if you are lucky. They won't deport you.. they will TOSS YOU INTO A SMELLY, HOT STINKING JAIL where you can make a lot of new friends and LEARN SPANISH... even if you don't WANT to.

I agree with the 2nd answer. With the great push the government is giving to tourism I doubt very much that you would be penalized with jail time. A fine, yes, you will most likely be fined for overstaying. But no worries, no jail time for you unless you get the officer REALLY mad, so play it cool and be apologetic and everything will be fine.
