  • Answer:

T-mobile will charge you $2 a minute to make phone calls from El Salvador, and you will not have service in all areas. If you plan to talk a lot, I would buy a cheap pre pay phone in El Salvador. I use Tigo, and they just stuck a chip into my ATT phone for $20 to activate it. Texts to the US cost 5 cents and calls are 13 cents/minute with Tigo.

I have been living in El Salvador for over a year and I have a G1 as well. It will work here with your same sim card but you will pay almost $2.00 a minute. It is best to ask T Mobile to unlock your sim card before you leave and then use Tigo here and get a new SIM card with an El Salvador number. Also be careful that you have them turn your internet service off while you are here. The first month I spent over $100 because they were charging me for my internet service and I was not even using it. The SIM cards here cost only about $3.00 and it is prepaid. You can purchase time with as little as $1.00 if you want. Tigo is the best company to be calling the states. They charge $0.09 a minute. While others can charge up to $0.15 a minute. Hope this helps. Have a great trip!!

First option call tmobile and get there international calling plan. Downside calls will be very expensive per minute as will texts. Second option go to a local cell company and get you phone unlocked and buy a sim only a couple of dollars and use prepaid minutes, then put your tmobile back in when you get home. Third option is to but a cheap($15.00) cell and use prepaid minute then give the phone away when you leave or save it for future trips. You can buy phone and sim cards at the malls and most large grocery stores. I use Claro and buy a $40.00 prepaid card then it seems i get bonus minutes. Some days are double minute days so you can get twice as many minutes .Enjoy your trip. Some Cell companies Tigo, Claro,Movilstar
