Im going to Ecuador in a couple of weeks. If I go there without a visa ( which means i could stay there for up to 90 days), and then decide i would like to stay for longer what can i do without having to leave the country? Can i get a tourist visa there? I still would like to freely be able to come back to the US whenever i would like though. Can someone please help me. Category

Answer:
Ecuadorian law permits tourists to stay in Ecuador for a maximum of 180 days. If you obtain your visa upon entry (from immigration) you will be given- at most- permission to stay for a maximum of 90 days. By way of contrast, if you obtain your visa from an Ecuadorian Consulate, you can obtain a visa for up to the full 180 days. Should your visa expire in Ecuador while under the 180-day limit, you can go to any Department of Migration, and request an extension. There is no charge for this service. Beyond 180 days, you must obtain a residency visa of some form, or leave the country. However, if you are savvy, you can enter the county, obtain a 90-day visa, and near the end of that visa, obtain a 90-day renewal. Once that visa is complete, visit a Ecuadorian Consulate in the United States, and obtain a 180-day visa. Each office (the Department of Migration and the Department of State) have the authority to issue tourist visas. After that, simply repeat the process. At most, you will need to leave the country once every six months for a few days. If you want absolute freedom, you will need to obtain a residency visa. Speaking from experience, the process is very convoluted. I recommend seeking a lawyer in Ecuador if you intend to pursue that avenue.

i believe you can but i think you would have to pay a fine when you come back for being there without a visa. i was there a year ago on a student exchange program and a couple of the people left the program but stayed in ecuador. as a result they didnt have the proper visa to sill be there after 90 days and ended up having to pay a fine when we returned to the us. im not sure if you can get a visa while down there without leaving the country, but it might be possible at one of the us embassies down there. you could also probalby find out before you leave too by calling the ecuadorian consulate in the us or checking online on the us customs and border protection website. cbp.gov good luck and hope it all works out. have a great time in ecuador...i absolutely loved it and cant wait to go back.
