Honestly, it is not as critical as you might think it is because of most times u live and you learn. It may be best to go ahead and study it while you can in order to navigate and communicate better with the people living and working there. Eventually you should pick up on their language depending on how long you will live there and how well your memory works.

It isn't absolutely necessary, but it does help to know a little when you arrive. I moved to Honduras a few years ago without knowing but the basics of Español and if I had to do it over again I would have been better prepared. As already mentioned, you will pick it up once you are there in spite of yourself.
