The best area for an american to live and work in costa rica?

Answer:
You are not allowed to work in Costa Rica if you are doing a job that a local could do. A friend of mine was working at a call center in San Jose, a massive operation taking up two floors above a shopping mall. They were recently told to stop operation as they were hiring foreigners, and the CR Government thought that the jobs should be filled by Ticos. I just spent a year living and working in Costa Rica, but my job is online so I can work from anywhere. If you can manage to find online work, you will want to rent a place that already has a high speed internet connection established. If you do not have an internet connection and need to set one up, it can take several months. At one point during the year my modem died, and it took ICE, the local utility company, a full week to replace it. Apparently that was pretty quick, but I lived in a wealthy area. The same friend that worked at a call center lost her connection two months ago, and is still waiting for it to be repaired. (Seriously!)

depends on what kind of work and what kind of country do you want to live in....you can't work here if you are taking a job from a Tico...if you are fluent in Spanish--maybe.......where to live?...70% live in the central valley..good if you like people..Sam Jose good if you like big cities...coast is much hotter but much fewer people.....then you have the cloud forests...the mountains...your question is much to general for an accurate answer

Just like any other country you will have to have a work permit of some sort to be able to work and live in Costa Rica is no different. Cost of living there isn't inexpensive either. Costa Rica is one of the most expensive countries in Central America. San Jose is riddled with foreigners, especially from Nicaragua who have escaped their country's poverty in search of a better future. San Jose is a place riddled with crime also and they are known for picking someone's pocket. Best you go for a visit and check things out before you aim to move down there. If I was you, I would check out Panama. Peaceful, cheaper living and possibilities that you just may have better prospects of getting a job.

Pinolera is painting a bad picture..... San Jose is cool, I have been many times and never had trouble, even driving is fine, EVEN with your window open....Shock I live an hour from SJ up one of the volcanos, its in the central valley but cooler, the views are great and the property cheaper. When you get here come see us at Poas Lodge, we always happy to meet others who speak English.
