What do I need to do to move to France alone?

I want to move to France. What do I need to know. I am a US Citizen.?

  • Looking to make the move before 2009

  • Answer:

You cannot just "move" to any foreign country. Eurpoean countries are especially difficult to emigrate to. If you are wealthy, or retired, and do not need to work...it is much easier, but if you need to work, it is very difficult. You must apply for a work visa...nearly impossible to get. As far as immigration, Americans are at the end of a very ong line...all Europeans, and people who can qualify as refugees are ahead of them. See site below to find the nearest French consulate to you so you can make inquiries and begin your research on how to apply for the appropriate visa.

If you haven't already done so, the first thing that you need to do is contact the French Embassy or your local consulate to obtain residency permission. You can only enter France legally for 90 days without a visa and you won't be able to legally work. Without that, no other preparations matter.
