How much for spending money on a trip to Scotland?

Spending Money for College Europe Trip?

  • Okay so I'm booked on a 35 day Europe trip (see link below for agenda.) I'm a college student so naturally money is a little tight. I need to set aside money to cover lunch and dinner daily for my trip and little things here and there as well as stuff to do on my "free days". I'm really not much into the souvenirs as I am experiences. See the link for the agenda. I don't want to skimp and miss out on Europe, but I don't need to be in the lap of luxury. http://www.efcollegebreak.com/college-trips/tripitinerary.aspx?touryear=2011&tourcode=ULTB

  • Answer:

When I spend a semester abroad in 2008 the program told me to bring $4000 dollars but included breakfast and dinner with my homestay. I would suggest you bring at least $1000. I'd save $2000 just so that I wouldn't have to worry about rationing my funds. Also remember that most ATMs in europe will charge hefty fees for withdrawing funds from foreign (in their case American) banks.

to be honest, you won't have much time for anything except taking in the sights, so find out about what admission fees are included. (Are they taking you to the Acropolis?) Most places will have cheap food somewhere (except Venice), worth doing some in advance research on restaurants as you can't live on McDonalds for all this time. Very few souvenirs are worth it anyway, just charge up that digital camera and snap away. you can be a bit clever too; get a train to Versailles with included ticket (check on Wikitravel), don't bother with Sitges (nice beach place but see more of Barcelona instead) - there are plenty more ways to do things cheaper, and avoid the rush of excursions which may have a tendency to include shopping stops. by the way, anyone gets charged fees at ATMs for anywhere except their own country. Europe is not one nation. Naturally you won't be carrying much cash, withdrawing money as you go and maybe using credit cards; warn your bank/credit card company so that the cards aren't blocked and find out how much the fees will be. enjoy - looks a great trip.
