Let me give you the Time Cop (1994 movie) answer: It will cost you a lot. More than you'd like to spend. Less than too much. It depends on how frugal you want to be and how much time you really want to spend riding the trains (which can be very tiring and it gets old very fast-- hot, stuffy, crowded, lots of motion sickness). If at all possible, fly to your destinations even if it means you have to reduce the number of cities you visit. Also, stay in cheaper hotels frequented by Europeans, not rich Japanese tourists. Don't be afraid to stay in a hotel where the bathroom is at the end of the hall. Most of these rooms do have a sink in each room and at home, you do have to walk down the hall, too. Don't insist on eating out every meal. No European does this and when you are at home, you can't afford to eat out every meal either. Buying groceries in Europe can be a lot of fun (and the food is often cleaner than that served in some restaurants). Traveling in the fall can also save $. Yes, you will have to do net searches for air fare, train fare, hotel costs because there are so many variables such as the cities you want to visit, when you can go on vacation, what kind of hotel you will tolerate, etc. At least you know how to use the internet. There are ppl with masters degrees and doctorate degrees in America who do not know how to use the internet in the year 2011. If you have never been in Europe, let me suggest that you visit England, France, Germany and Italy (if you have 3 weeks). If you have 2 weeks, just visit 3 countries. Spend your time enjoying a world class city like London or Paris instead of riding trains the whole time.
