How do I travel abroad with money?

  • Hi, That questions wording sounds a little funny, sorry. I'm traveling to the UK in a couple of weeks, more specifically England. And I was wondering how to handle money when abroad. I want to bring about $1000.00 dollars as far as cash is concerned. I know the exchange rate is different, and pounds are worth more. But, I want to know if I should convert my money beforehand, and if so where can I do that? Hopefully at the airport. And if I don't convert, can I even travel to the UK with that much money in cash? Would I need a travelers check? Any help would be greatly appreciated. -Tara

    It's always best to exchange the money in the country who's currency you are changing to. Always go to banks to change money and not exchange booths as they will make you pay with your soul. I wouldn't bring any cash at all (or no more than what you need for a day or two) and just use plastic until you get to a bank or atm, like that you don't have to worry about getting mugged or otherwise loosing the money.

Is there a particular reason why you would want to carry that much cash with you? If you are robbed (pickpocketed is a possibility) then you are suddenly without all of your money. Why not just withdraw the money from a bank machine in the UK? You will get the same exchange rate that you would get from your bank anyways - which is pretty much the best you will get anywhere - plus a few dollar fee from the foreign bank for using their machine. It's safer to maybe get $500 US converted into pounds before leaving, and then make a withdrawal once you're in the UK and need the other half of the funds.
