How can I get around paying extra charges when traveling by train through Italy with a Eurail pass?

Travel from Copenhagen to Prague via Germany.?

  • Me and my Girl friend are looking to travel to prague in october or November and we where hoping to go by train as it would be more interesting. Problem is though its proving rather hard. We looked into the eurail/interrail option (shes danish im Australian so we would have to get different passes) that dosnt work as eurail wont offer me a select pass that includes the Czech Republic. And i don't want a global pass. Ive noticed that Deutsche Bahn have the option of traveling from Copenhagen to Prague although the wont give me a price due to the fact its outside of Germany. Can anyone give me an idea of what it may cost? Just a rough idea so i can decide weather it can be done or not.

  • Answer:

I just checked on RailEurope.com and the 2nd class fare is $332. You'd take an almost seven hour train ride from Cophenhagen to Berlin, and then a four and half hour trip from Berlin to Prague. The train ride would be scenic in part, but I think you'd be much better off just flying. Sterling Air has fares as low as $34 (plus tax) and will get there in a fraction of the time. There are scenic train rides you could take in the Czech Republic that are less expensive & lengthy. Have an awesome time. Both cities are beautiful. ~ Pax

You can price this on the German train website, but you have to break the trip into two pieces. There's an ICE train from Copenhagen to Berlin leaving at 7:42 am. This costs 127.20 euro at the normal fare, but if the discount seats are available when you want to go, the price is 39 euro. The normal fare from Berlin to Prague is 56.80 euro, but the discounted fare is 29 euro. There are trains from Berlin to Prague every couple of hours. You could take the train for as low as 68 euro each. Prices for point-to-point tickets on sites like raileurope will always be more expensive than dealing directly with the train operators because you're paying a fee to have them purchase the ticket for you. As the other answer noted, there is a good budget flight option which is both inexpensive and fast. I've decided to take the train between Prague and Amsterdam a couple of times in the past with a very short connection time in Berlin (about 7 minutes) with no problem. It's a long ride, but nice when you've got the time.
