Should I go to Amsterdam?

Your Open QuestionShow me another » Should I go to Amsterdam/Europe for spring break? Hey everyone. I'm a college student who lives at home. I got a nice tax return back this year and one of my friends was telling me we should go to Amsterdam and tour some of Europe for spring break. Now it would be nice to save some money for a rainy day and have some money in the bank but I also figure I'm young and if I dont do this stuff now...well when am I going to get a chance to do this? I'm 23 years old and I'm pretty mature. I'm not going out there JUST to sit around at the coffee shops all day long lol.

Answer:
Amsterdam is a great place to visit - there are tons of interesting things to see and do. When is your spring break? In late March, it can be pretty cold and wet there - I still usually go for a weekend in Leiden though after Keueknhof opens in mid-March and then stay in Amsterdam itself at the end of April when it's much more likely to be nice weather. Mid-March is one of the cheaper times to visit. You know your financial situation and are the best judge of whether or not to save the money. In the current economic situation, you need to think about how likely you are to find a job coming out of school and being able to support yourself. You never know when you'll get a chance to travel in the future, but that doesn't mean it can't happen. When I was your age, I saved instead of traveling, but I still ended up living in Italy and traveling most weekends and holidays for almost 12 years now.

Europe (food & accommodation) is very expensive. It is worth the experience though. Plan your trip so that you aren't wasting too much time in one place. We were gone for six weeks, saw France, Italy, Austria, Germany & Amsterdam for under $16,000. That was food, accommodation & spending money for two people. Two days in Amsterdam was enough for us. London you need a week, Rome a few days - has lots of graffiti there. The south of France is beautiful. Austria and Germany are very beautiful. I would probably average three nights in each city. Then you can always go back to the ones you like another time. It is wise to save some for a rainy day. Enjoy yourself!!!
