How can I get around paying extra charges when traveling by train through Italy with a Eurail pass?

Eurail question--traveling through country not on 3-country pass?

  • My 3 country Eurail pass (Germany Switzerland Italy) just came in the mail today, for travel in May-June of this year. My original plan was to go from Zurich to Munich. On the timetable that came with the pass, it says that there are trains from Zurich to Munich, via Austria. There is no change of train required in Austria, but my pass does not cover Austria. Will I run into a problem? If worse comes to worst, I'll just take a train to a different city in Germany and connect there to get to Munich, so that I don't run into a problem. But would I have a problem using my rail pass on a train "Zurich--Munich, via Austria" in my case? Thanks for the help!

  • Answer:

No, you can't use the pass to travel through a country for which it's not valid. See the FAQ "Can I travel through a country not covered by my pass" here: http://www.eurail.com/support/use-pass . This site has a ton of information on using Eurail passes here: http://www.seat61.com/Railpass-and-Eurail-pass-guide.htm#Eurail pass range
