Finnish people and you who have been to Finland look here?

For Finnish people... Or people who know about Finland?

  • 1) Can you tell please me any famous pop singers currently in Finland? I would really like to know some... 2) Which part of Finland do you reccommend living in? It could be either the warmest part of Finland (I like the cool weather, still, and I assume that warmest part of Finland is still cool/cold, right?) or the most interesting... If you have anything else to say about this country, please mention... Thanks very much... I am planning to learn Finnish...

  • Answer:

    1) If you want to listen to music that is sung in finnish you can for example listen to Kaija Koo, Kari Tapio or Värttinä. Jenni Vartiainen - missä murusein on is though my favorite finnish song at the moment. If you like rap/hip hop you could listen to Fintelligens or Aste. You find a lot of artist from Wikipedia also... =) 2) It depends so much what you are after. If you are coming to Finland only to study finnish I guess you just have to choose the place where this is possible. I like Helsinki, and I could guess they have a good program at Helsinki Univeristy for studying finnish. But Turku, Tampere or Oulu could be good a well if you are looking for a litle bit "bigger" city. I have lived in Vaasa for 6 years and loved the place, but I don't recommend it since there you will hear so much swedish... Finland is bilingual, about 6% of the popultaion has swedish as their mothertongue. The places where swedish is most spoken are on the cost. You don't mention where you are from, so it is difficult to give any specific "tips" about Finland. I can just say that it is a beautiful country with a lot of nice people. Some finns might seem a bit unpolite and reserved in the beginning, but once you get to know them you get friends for life. I am in Mexico at the moment and one thing that I really miss from Finland is that there most things get done; fast and on time. and about the wheater... There is four seasons that are very different. The wheater differ quite lot from year to year as well... Some winters it barely gets under -10 degrees (celcius) in southern Finland, while this winter has been very could and there have been A LOT of snow... Last summer was even very hot with a lot of days when i was around 30 degrees, but some summers it is only raining and the temperature barely gets over 20 degrees... This is southern Finland... They are saying that next summer ought to be warm, so welcome! =) hope you had some help, and have a great time learning finnish =)

Other answers

1) HIM, Nightwish, Teräsbetoni, Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, The Rasmus, Apocalyptica, Jenni Vartiainen, Antti Tuisku... 2) Any city would be good, the countryside has got a beautiful landscape as well but there the distance between shops and other services can be a bit of a problem. These days the weather doesn't matter very much anymore, as the summer in Lapland can be +20C anyway! Greetings from a genuine Finn (living 612 km from Helsinki to north, but NOT in Lapland)!

I have a friend who is 100% Finnish, speaks fluent Finnish and comes from there...I haven't spoken to her recently, but I remember a conversation where she mentioned Finland was bilingual - Finnish and Swedish because Sweden conquered Finland a while ago. I believe Finnish would, obviously, be used more than Swedish. EDIT: Oh, a thumbs down. I guess my information was inaccurate, though looking over it again, it didn't really disclose anything of actual importance. Meh.
