I'd like to plan a 2 month trip to Europe sometime between June - August. Any suggestions?

Right now I'm in Iraq. I'd be leaving here sometime between June - August. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd like to keep my budget down...don't want to burn through all my savings on this trip. I want to get a sense of where I'm going. I don't just want to see the tourist spots. I want experience the culture of where ever I go. I've put some questions below. What ever you can help me out with I appreciate! Thanks a million! Yesi 1. Where should I go? I have a rough outline of where I want to go...but I'm open to suggestions. 2. Should I rent a car or use the Euro-rail? What's more cost effective and which is more convenient? 3. What is the best case and worse case scenario as far as cost of the total trip is concerned? 4. Who should I fly with? What airline is good, who's not and why? 5. What are travel "must & don't haves"? 6. How much should I budget for: plane ticket food lodging transportation tours/entrance fees visas 7. What visas will I need? I'm an American citizen. 8. Did I miss anything?

Answer:
I can only help you part of the way. 2. A car is good for travel between towns and useable in small to mid sized towns. A car in any big european city is a nuisance. Parking can easily cost 1 euro per 10 minutes. Gas is expensive, count on 1.60 per litre. International rentals are possible but if you drop of the car in another country you will be paying trough the nose. A car does give you flexibilty to reach places in the countryside. 4. Short distances inside europe, not much difference really. DO be aware that budget airlines like easyjet are extremely strict in all their procedures from luggage to missing a flight. 5.No drugs, no weapons of any kind. Take some earplugs. 6. LArgely depends on the country. Most of europe a hostel will do 25-40 euros a night. Entry fees anywhere between 5 and 20 euros. Food, also depends on what and where. 6 euros will buy you a fast food "meal". A half pint 2-3 euros. Simple 2 course meal in a simple restaurant, 15-20 euros. Prices vary, a tourist hotspot can easily double food prices. Entry fees anywhere between 5 and 20 euros. 7. None for the Schengen countries if you keep your visit within 90 days. 8. Get a lonely planet backpackers guide.

Bear in mind that these are the hottest months of the year, and that some countries in the Mediterranean simply shut down for business and head for the beach. Do not rent a car, are you nuts? It's much cheaper and more comfortable to take the train. How much you pay also depends on what kind of accommodation you use. You could try the adventurous route and do the couch-surfing thing, or you could go the other extreme and do 5-star hotels. In between there's this: www.hostelworld.com. Read all reviews before booking. And at the time of year, you WILL need to book ahead. The airline you choose depends on the country you're flying from. I suggest going to the airline websites to see what you will have to pay, and invest in a good guidebook to for convenient information on the spot. I recommend the DK Eyewitness Guides series, but there are lots of others out there as well. I don't think you'll need a visa for most EU countries if you're just coming for a few days to each country.

Slovenia you don't need a visa while you're in Slovenia, I would rent a car. This way you can get to villages and other places much easier than with bus/tran. Though, train is a good option to travel around the country also. If you want to experiance something different you I suggest staying at one of many tourist farms.
