Backpacking Europe tips?
-
I am planning on backpacking Europe alone after graduating high school to flex my freedom as an adult. I'm a woman, so I have some obvious concerns about traveling abroad on my own... Can seasoned solo travelers tell me whether or not this is safe? I should say as a prerequisite that I have travelled fairly extensively, and am by no means naive. I am also very nearly fluent in French. Studying other languages to learn basic phrases won't be a problem, as languages come easily to me. I currently plan on spending 3-4 weeks in Europe, budgeting my time between the following cities: 1. London at Palmers Lodge 2. Paris (day trips to Varsailles and Tours) at BVJ 3. Barcelona at Kabul 4. Nice (day trip to Monaco) at ? 5. Zurich at ? 6. Munich at Wombat's 7. Prague at Miss Sophie's 8. Vienna at Wombat's 9. Venice at ? 10. Florence at Archi Rossi 11. Rome at Funny Hostel I'm most interested in Paris and Rome (a return trip), so I'd like to spend the most time in those cities. How long a stay do you think the other cities deserve? I plan to go sightseeing and to museums, and have no interest in shopping beyond al fresco markets. I'll be staying in dorm-style hostels, and eating food from local deli's, bakeries, and super markets. At night, I'm interested in doing some light drinking, dancing, and having a good time. I'm outgoing, and would be happiest staying somewhere where I could meet new people with similar interests as me. I'm planning on purchasing a EuRail youth flexi-pass. None of my plans are finite, so if you have any warnings against or suggestions for other cities and hostels, I'd love to hear what you have to say!

Answer:
3 to 4 weeks and 11 destinations is right. Do not add more, as you will be overfilling your time and will just remember the insides of the trains rather than the cities. Remember that you are the only one responsible for your safety, so you will have to take care of that yourself. It sounds logical and should go without saying, the practical side is that you should keep to the same rules of safety as you would at home. Like do not go into the park at night, if you do not trust a place do not go in, do not go home with people you have just met and do not accept drinks where people have been able to put something in and keep your drinks in your sight all the times so people do not put something in. Not that Europe is not safe, but there are some risks involved in traveling alone everywhere. It is good to keep a tight budget and you seem to have your plans made, and well made, but do go out for a good cooked lunch or dinner at least once in each country, specially in France and Italy food is very good. Would be a shame to miss it altogether. Be careful when ordering in deli's, those are often more expensive, go to the butchers and cheese shops, that is what Europeans do.

If you were a man or travelling in a group I'd suggest eastern Europe also (Prague, Bratislava, Budapest, Kiev, Lviv, Sofia, Belgrade, Zagreb etc etc) but being a solo woman you're best sticking to western Europe tbh, safer. I've travelled eastern Europe quite a bit and trust me if you are a single girl then western Europe is safer for you, a pity but true. You forgot Dublin or Cork in Ireland : ) Of course you'd need to get a ferry or a cheap flight from England (sometimes only a few $) http://www.ryanair.com For cheap hotels, B&B's and hostels check out http://www.hotelscombined.com some very good prices. Enjoy your trip!
