Do you need an international drivers license to drive threw Europe?

  • My husband is in the military and we are stationed in Germany. We have a German drivers license, and are planning a trip to Paris and to Amsterdam. Do we need an international drivers license to drive threw France, Belgium and the Netherlands? We will only be in traveling for a few days. Thanks!

    In the twelve years I've been living in Italy, I've only been asked for a driver's license once (other than at car rental places). That was just a routine check where they were checking the paperwork on all the cars going by - license, insurance, etc. No one asked for an IDP (although I had one) - it's just a translation of your home license into multiple languages. In my case, the insurance for the car I was driving required me to have one while I was still driving on my US license until I got my Italian license. It doesn't hurt to have one, but you shouldn't have a problem without it - especially since you have a German license.

These days you only need an IDP if your license uses an alphabet that the local cops can't read, e.g. if you were going to China. Within Europe, your regular license is fine. I presume you know that France, Belgium, Netherlands, and Germany are all in the Schengen zone, so there's no border formalities at all.

Hi Becky, you won't need an international driver's license at all, and your German license is just fine. An international driver's license is only required for a few countries outside of Europe. Enjoy your trip.

Yes, of course you do. Seeing as they are different countries, therefore you would be driving internationally.
