How can I make phone calls the cheapest way internationally?

What is the cheapest way to make phone calls from Spain to the U.S.?

  • I've heard several different ways and each claim to be the cheapest. Should a cell phone be bought in Spain and have minutes put on it? Or is an international calling card the way to go? Using our own cell phone is not an option.

  • Answer:

The cheapest way by far is to use the call box locals, most advertise the price by the minute outside so you can see the price before phoning.

Get an skype account (skype.com), put some euros on it and start calling. Of course you need a computer but I've been using it for a lot of years and it works perfectly. Another thing is if the other person has an skype account you don't pay anything for the call. If you're not sure about the fares you can always check them on the same site. (watch out that to some countries there have different fares for cell phone and land lines) Sometimes Skype also offers calling cards with great fares BUT they are not available on all countries. Check if they are offered for Spain

I used the website comfi.com to buy calling cards while I was living abroad. It's like a priceline for calling cards; it has cards for pretty much any country and a bunch of different companies to compare; it was really cheap and fit into my grad student budget. However, be sure to buy one a few days before you leave for your trip as they will require a phone number to call for verifying your identity in order to charge your credit card before they'll email your pin to you. Also make sure you're very clear on what country codes to dial etc before leaving. It's explained pretty clearly on the website though. Since graduating I've traveled with a cell phone and I love it but it's more expensive. Unless you're staying for a a couple months, who wants to spend their time messing around with buying a phone when there's sightseeing to be done. Also, unless you're fluent in Spanish (and even if you are) it could be tricky to buy a phone and convey what you're looking for and not get ripped off. There really isn't much English spoken there, even in the big cities and it can be a bit confusing/disorganized.
