If you are interested in only staying in one city and making a couple day trips to the countryside, you can often find flight+hotel deals. If you're trying to do things on a budget, check out hostels.com for cheap dormitory style rooms. They also offer some "private" rooms though usually you'll have to share a bathroom. Often a hostel will cost half as much or even less than a budget hotel room (maybe $30 a night).
