Which European city has the best art scene & nightlife for young and non-trendy travelors?
-
A few of my friends (and myself, of course) are planning a trip to Europe this year and were wondering which city is best for late night partying and general carousing? We're really looking to get into some "trouble" here, but nothing too extreme or illegal. We're also sort of wanting to avoid anything too hip or trendy and are seeking more of a laid-back, liberal and avante-garde art scene with cool friendly locals...Someone suggested Berlin, another person said it was Amsterdam or Barcelona? Does anyone have any ideas?

Answer:
If you want the biggest avant garde art scene and great late night partying, Berlin is amazing. You won't want to leave. Every time I go, I can't wait to go back as it's never enough time.

I spent 6 months in Barcelona and while there is some great night life there, I got really sick of all the trendy meatheads running around, I felt like a wet t-shirt contest could have broken out at any moment. I did however really enjoy Madrid, that city rages. Dublin can also offer some fun and laid back nightlife.

Those would be my choices too! Berlin is packed full of clubs. Some hip with the techno kids, some arty & bohemian, some punk.... and the art scene (if you don't mind street art/graffiti!) is fabulous. Barcelona has a great, laid-back atmosphere... complete with palm trees and warmth, and a main drag (Las Ramblas) that is busy from midnight to 3 or 4 am with people out wandering and meeting people (and busy all day with tourists, human statues, and vendors! Great place). Lots of different nightspots, and great art in the form of architecture - Gaudi's modernist buildings are lots of fun! And finally, Amsterdam is the ultimate chill spot. I didn't love their clubs and bars, but their "coffeehouses" (those would be the ones that sell.. um.. NOT coffee, if you get my drift) can be lots of fun, and often have comfy couches and pillows to hang out on. If you're looking for art, the well-stocked Van Gogh Museum is in Amsterdam!
