How do I apply for school in Norway?

Does BI Norwegian school of Management in Oslo, Norway have a school code?

  • I am a USA Citizen and I am trying to apply for financial aid of some kind for BI in Oslo, Norway. But its not on the list for the US fafsa student loan website. How are people supposed to go to school, if BI isnt listed on any student loan website? The school is well known in Europe, it opened in the 1940's, and has multiple campus' in Norway. It just sounds so weird. Anyone have any help? Or any ideas how I could get a student loan for a Norwegian college? Anything would be great, even if I need a co-signer. Kind regards!

  • Answer:

BI, is a private school on norway, it is one of the few schools norwegians have to pay to attend. If you go to BI there is exnglish and norwegian programs. Maybe the us government does not recognize it as a fully accredited schools by us standards but it is recognized widely in europe. Your lucky, some countries do not even give loans for attending foreign schools. Your probably can get a student loan privately from banks, norway won't lend to you cause your not from there.

It is not a question of accreditation, prestige or the value of the degree program. In order for a school to have a fafsa code, the SCHOOL (in this case BI, Oslo) must send in an application to the U.S. Department of Education. If they do not do this, or renew their application from previous years, there is no fafsa code. Even in order to receive private loans, many US banks require the fafsa determination. In the Autumn of 2011, Swedish universities will start charge non-EU students out-of-state tuition for the first time in history. You would imagine, if they were thinking ahead, they would get a fafsa code for US applicants. Nope, the only schools in Sweden with a fafsa code are Lund, Uppsala and Chalmers. Not even prestigious Stockholm School of Economics (Handelshögskolan) with it's heavily marketed MBA program bothered to get a FAFSA code. Financial aid functions quite differently there since every institution is well-known to the student aid departments. I heard Bank of America is a bit more sophisticated about private student loans for international degree programs. EDIT I found the code, it is okay to use the Bergen campus if it is the SAME university as in Oslo. NORGES HANDELSHOYSKOLE BERGEN, NORWAY HELLEVEIEN 30 FEDERAL SCHOOL CODE: G30298 The BI is Norges Handelshoyskole (rough translation is Norwegian Business School) BI was founded in 1943 as 'Bedriftøkonomisk Institut' (English: Institute of Managerial Economics), hence the abbreviation 'BI'. Good luck in your studies!
