I'm headed to Paris for a short weekend, should I take a tour or just walk it myself?

The Frommers Guide has some good do-it-yourself day tours, but I'm wondering if it makes more sense to actually go on a tour? They're relatively inexpensive and see all of the places that I'm hoping to go.

Answer:
I've been to Paris three times. If you are good at navigating the metro and can navigate the streets with a map, you'll probably do fine without a group tour. This way, you can make your own schedule, and see exactly what you want. However, if getting around seems like a challenge, then take a tour and let someone else show you the way. A couple of combination options: 1)There are 2 - 3 hour walking tours of Paris. This can be a good introduction to the city and an opportunity to meet others. 2) There is a "hop-on, hop-off" double decker bus that makes a loop past all the tourist attractions. Buses come about every 15 minutes and stop at each location. Makes it very easy to get around without getting lost.

I live in Paris, and I'd recommend going by yourself! It's much more enjoyable compared to tours. You're not as rushed, and can work off of your own time frame. There's so much to see here, and on tours you aren't able to fully appreciate the city! Bon Voyage! Etienne

Walk! Lots to see in Paris and its much better to walk it. If you get tired, you can always take the subway. Its easy to figure out the subway, even if you don't speak a word of French. (And its cheap.) A few sites may be far away, but you can always jump in a cab. Paris is best experienced by walking. Leave the bus tour to the old people.

Both have good and bad points Metro and walking is certainly more flexible and probably cheaper. Organised tour has the advantage of company from others on the tour and the fun that a good guide brings. I've done both in the past and I guess it just depends on the mood you're in that day. I would recommend walking but if you want to take a tour then try a "bateau mouche" - this is a guided boat trip along the river Seine and is a really nice way to see some of the main sights and orientate yourself to what's wherer in the city. Hope that helps. See the following link for my photos of the various Paris sights: http://www.360travelguide.com/results.asp?StartNum=1&CountrySelect=France&LocSelect=Paris Have a great time!
