What backpack should I buy for trip to Europe?

I'm doing a backpack trip around europe.. I need help please?

  • As i said, i'm doing a backpack trip around europe in june 2011 by train. The main idea is travelling at nights and try to avoid hotels, Yes!! i know it will be exhausting but i think it's worth to do it :D I would like please if you can help me with the itinerary, since it's a very difficult task looking for the main sights in each city, and remember i'll be in each one for one or 2 days top, So if you've been or know something about the following cities, i really appreciate your help!! =) I want information about what is worth-seeing, about hostels and hotel (if they're too expensive), about food, museums (if there is any free day, like in Paris that every first sunday of every month it's free-entry) and things like that.. Please I really need your help!! The cities are: Berlin, Zurich, Munich, Budapest, Praga, Amsterdam, Viena, Innsbruck, Venice, Rome, Pisa, Florencia, Pompeya y Zagreb Those are the ones that i've until know.. The trip will be for one month and i want to know as much as possible... Thanks a million for your help!!! :D

http://www.hihostels.com Has great hostels all over Europe. Clean and well run with English speaking staff. They have lots of information about what's on locally, what's worth seeing, and what to avoid. They can also help with a reservation at you next port of call. One month is a bit tight for your trip. If you have to cut back I suggest you omit Rome. It's a long way to travel and you will have to backtrack through italy wasting valuable time. Unless Amsterdam is the point of entry into Europe again it's out of the way. great city and worth a visit but time consuming to get to from any of the other cities you mention. Have fun, you'll never regret it.

Years ago I spent three months on my first backpacking trip in Europe and there was an awful lot that I still didn't have time to see. I stayed only in hostels (no hotels) as well as a few nights on trains or sleeping in railway stations , neither of which I recommend. Ian has put up a good link to hostels have a good look at it and also do a "hostels europe" search on google for other sites. You could borrow a Lonely Planets guide to Europe from the library to check on sights to see and lots of other great advice for backpackers. There is too much to list here. You can also do as I did and that is go to the tourist info place as soon as you arrive in a city and get maps and info usually free. The tourist info office is often at or near the main railway station. Traveling by night is exhausting and it means that the next day you are very tired and probably need to catch up on sleep missed so that day is partially lost in addition you miss out on all the scenery along the way and unless it is a very long trip you arrive in a city at 3..00 AM and are stuck at the station trying to sleep on a bench. I would not eliminate Rome or Amsterdam as Ian suggests they are well worth visiting , Berlin however was leveled during WW 2 and so there is not so interesting as Rome for example , so I would eliminate it first and Munich would be another that I would cut out if I had to and perhaps Zagreb. Obviously all the places you list are worthy of visiting and I have been to them and many others but with just one month it may be better to have a more concentrated experience of fewer places rather than a dilute experience of many. You will most likely return for other trips so you will still see places you miss this time , i have been back several times there is so much to see. Have good time....

Honestly love, the best information you could get is available in your local library from guidebooks there. And would you ever stop and think about the time you have available and what you can actually see in that time. It isn't possible to 'do' all of those destinations in a month. You're far better off picking just half of them and actually enjoying them. And look into www.hostelworldcom for budget accommodation, and you could even try couchsurfing: www.couchsurfing.com.

Check the excellent ROugh Guides and then do your own homework. Your itinerary is rather ambitious and is mostly in the wrong order. Buy a map!

Every city has free museums days but you have to google that since there is a lot of cities you want to visit. Actually every museum has its own schedule of free days so maybe you can combine maximum 2 museums. Most of these cities has "white nights" in September when you can visit loads of museums for free. Skip Zagreb in July and head to the coast and visit Pula and some of the islands in Croatia coast. For cheap hostels try this website http://www.hostels.st/?tid=1307 One day? Why are you traveling at all? Getting ready for marathon? All of these cities take you at least 3 days of visit so you have to stay in hostels here and there. If you want to save some money try to skip big cities and enjoy the countryside and some other places than just big cities with loads of tourists in them. Try to get this schedule smaller and visit less cities so you can enjoy more and if your budget is small skip Europe and travel to the Middle East, it is much cheaper. Check put Paris hostels http://www.hostels.st/en/france/paris/index.html?tid=1307 Amstedam http://www.hostels.st/en/holland/amsterdam/index.html?tid=1307 Berlin http://www.hostels.st/en/germany/berlin/index.html?tid=1307 Florence http://www.hostels.st/en/italy/florence/index.html?tid=1307 and there is much more on http://www.hostels.st/?tid=1307 Cheers J

I do not suggest Zagreb. There's not much to see and do there except shopping. Go to Ljubljana instead, it has a very picturesque city center. You wont regret it. I suggest going from Ljubljana to Venice. Train leaves at around 2 am and arrives to venice at around 7 am (good for sleeping). If you go from Venice to ljubljana (10pm - 3am) you'll have troubles with spending the night as hostels rarely accept guests at night. For a hostel in Ljubljana i suggest Hostel Celica (HIPPEST HOSTEL #1 by Lonely Planet and among world's ultimate experiences).
