Travelling by car through Europe?

  • I'm turning 18 soon and have saved up enough money to go travelling. I always thought I would use public transportation but I got to thinking. I'd really like to buy a car while I'm in Europe (not rent) to travel around. I plan to spend at least a year travelling. My questions are 1). How difficult is it for a U.S. citizen to buy a car in Europe? 2.) Are they much more expensive over there? 3.) What paperwork would I have to get? 4.) Is it overly costly to travel by car? I figured I could sleep in my car when needed that way I could save on hotel fees. Lastly, is it difficult to travel by car in Asia?

  • Answer:

I have a family in Australia and every 2 years when they come here they buy a car and then travel around Europe for 1-2 months. Last time they bought a car in France and got it delivered to an airport in Germany. When they leave back to Australia they sell it and they say it's a lot cheaper than renting.

you may well have big issues on the insurance; certainly in the UK it would cost you several thousand pounds. Cars are cheap, insurance isn't. also as a US citizen you can't stay in Europe for more than a few months, do the research. fuel as mentioned costs twice what you are used to. And tramp-camping is outlawed in many places, because presumably your car doesn't have a toilet so a lot of people leave a mess. not impossible, but probably too expensive.

Travelling by car in europe is no issue at all. Europe has one of the most developed infrastructures in the world. You can get a good working car for under a 1000 euros. Just keep in mind that fuel here is MUCH more expensive than in the US. In holland (where I live) we have the highest fuel price in the world... 3 times higher than in the US. In compensation, european cars are much more fuel efficient than US cars. Buying a car shouldnt be an issue if you bring an official Passport and such. You have to insure it and pay road taxes in the country where you buy it. Keep in mind that you can not drive your car in another country for longer than 3 months. After than you have to leave the country to register the car in the country where you are staying. Good luck
