I pretty much agree with Paul. It's only 1 hr 35 min from Rome to Florence on the train and another 2 hours to Venice from there. You can find schedules and prices for the trains here in Italy at: http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=ad1ce14114bc9110VgnVCM10000080a3e90aRCRD From Venice, you have a choice. However, I would go to Vienna first and then on to Paris because it saves a lot of distance over going to Paris and then backtracking. I would consider flying from Vienna to Paris since there is no direct train. If you do choose to go to Paris before Vienna, I prefer to take the train when traveling from my home near Venice because it suits my schedule better and you don't have to deal with transportation to/from airports, long check-in and security lines at airports or waiting for baggage. The night trains are nice because you can sleep through the night while you travel and don't have to pay for a hotel/hostel for the night. It's also the only direct train from Venice to Paris. There are various levels of discounts on the night trains if you buy tickets far enough in advance. Fro example on the train between Venice and Paris a berth in a 4 bed compartment costs 120 euro at the standard fare. The cheapest discounted fare (the "smart" fare) for the same berth is 45 euro. It's unlikely that you would find this available for July or August at this point. This is a popular route and the cheap fares are likely to be sold out already. You might be able to get this if you're planning on going later though. The German train site is good for planning routes throughout most of Europe: http://www.bahn.de/i/view/USA/en/index.s%E2%80%A6 you can find options for Paris to Vienna or vice versa. You can find links to the various national train sites where you can price tickets for the train here: http://www.seat61.com/ You can find budget flights for comparison at: http://www.skyscanner.it/

The plan sounds okay and it will be enough time, but you should take a plane from Paris to Vienna. There are high speed railway services on the entire route (France-Germany: TGV, Germany: ICE, Germany-Austria: railjet) but the distance is really far and the journey would take more than half a day.
