  There are good things about England, of course, but overall I hear it's a pretty rough place to live, unless you're rich or something. There is a lot of drunken violence and petty hooliganism... I don't think I would feel safe there. Plus it's very expensive and the weather is pretty foul most of the time, and people maybe not the friendliest (these are just things I've heard many times - I've never been there). But Monocle magazine puts out an annual survey of "top 25 cities of the world to live in" - about half are in Europe (none in England, UK or Ireland): Munich, Zurich, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Vienna, Berlin, Hamburg, Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon, Geneva... don't remember any others, but if number of good cities to live in means anything, than it looks like Germany is the winner... I would say the following countries have the strongest economies and best quality of life in Europe: Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France, Luxembourg, maybe Belgium, and of course Monaco, if you can afford the Beverly Hills of Europe. Many people like Spain and Italy, but the economy and job market in those countries is terrible, so only if you don't need to work! (And finding work anywhere in Europe as an American citizen is near impossible anyway - much easier to be a student).
