Where is a good place to go for a weekend in Europe in January that doesn't involve skiing?

    If you live in the uk try London or edinburgh or even book into a hotel in the city nearest you and try to see it through the eyes of a tourist it can be quite suprising what you find. (Also keeps all your travel money for spending on meals etc). Failing that Prague and Amsterdam have always been enjoyable for me and i've seen in the new year with both.

Prague is very nice but can be bitterly cold in January. What about Venice just before Carnival?

Amsterdam-- Paris are both good anytime of the year.

If you just want peace and quiet and beautiful scenery then I recommend Sardinia. We went for 6 days and it was heaven.

If you like comics (known in France as bandes dessinées or BD), the largest comics convention in Europe takes place every year at the end of January in Angoulême in southwest France (the department of Poitou-Charentes). The town itself (which is a bit like Windsor - river, castle on the hill, historic charm) is completely taken over by comics, with department store windows showing cartoon figures.
