What is it like living and working in Finland?
-
I will have my master's degree in Secondary education with a concentration in Foreign Language, and a masters in Mathematics (I minored in French and Spanish). I want to live in Finland for a couple of years, and observe their fantastic education system. So, is there anyway that I could possibly get a job being a teaching assistant, if I can't get a job teaching (which I'm pretty sure that I won't be able to). I also want to learn the Finnish Language. Are there any websites that I can check out to get a good feel about living and working/teaching in Finland? How much do teachers and teaching assistants get paid annually? Do you have any experiences teaching in Finland, what is it like? People from Finland, what is life like in Finland? How difficult is it to learn Finnish? Are there any schools/community colleges (like in the US-where I'm from), or small universities that I could attend to obtain knowledge of the Finnish language? Any other information that you could give me about living and working/teaching in Finland would be absolutely fantastic! Thanks for answering! I really appreciate it!!!!

Answer:
Finding Finnish language teachers in the USA is hard. You might try to find a Finn in the USA who is just good at teaching it. I only know my own family who speaks it but beyond that..

I think that you have good chances to get a job as a teaching assistant, because they seem to love foreign language teachers around here. I have had many of them during my school years. (I still have at the University). I don't know how much the salary could be... ~2300 €/ month? As a student I guess that it would not be so bad to teach in Finland. Upper secondary schools are probably the best choice. I'm sure that you'll find many ways to learn Finnish. It's a hard language, but don't worry, you'll manage in Finland without any knowledge in Finnish. And personally, I love living in Finland.

Well, the job situation among foreigners is not very good at the moment due to the ongoing economical downturn, so please do not keep your dreams too high for getting the job you want. Finnish is a challenging language indeed, but it is not impossible to learn. One just has to go to courses and work very hard to obtain good language skills. Usually it is the university level where native English speakers have the best chance to get a job, as universities hire natives for the language courses there. http://finland.fi/public/default.aspx?nodeid=41814&contentlan=2&culture=en-US http://uuno.tamk.fi/ http://donnerwetter.kielikeskus.helsinki.fi/finnishforforeigners/ http://oppiminen.yle.fi/easyfinnish/ http://www.yle.fi/opinportti/supisuomea/ (Finnish only) http://www2.edu.fi/ymmarrasuomea/ (Finnish only) http://www04.edu.fi/suomeaolehyva/ (Finnish only)
