Where can I get a cheap family skiing holiday?

Cheap snow holiday in Europe?

  • Hi everyone! I'm planning to take my partner to a surprise holiday for her birthday/st valentine's this February. She loves snow and in Glasgow we don't seem to get much... Can you suggest of a good place in Europe/UK with snow (not interested in skiing) that is romantic but not too expensive? We're both still students and funds are low :( Thanks for your time, have a Merry Christmas!

  • Answer:

The Cairngorms - not too far from you. There are Forestry wooden chalets which you can rent near the bottom of the mountain and the countryside is beautiful overlooking a loch (whose name I've forgotten - sorry) Last time we were there in June and after getting sunburnt in Pitlochry, went up the Cairngorms to play in the snow to cool down!

Eastern Europe, Hungary, the Czech Republic, or Slovakia. Very pretty, and romantic, and still quite cheap.

Poland, still very cheap. Go to Krakow, really great place, and should have a lot of snow this time of year. Rent a condo near the old town square, inside the Planty. Enjoy the great architecture, the churches, the palace on Wawel Hill. Day trips from Krakow: Visit Oświęcim (Auschwitz) for an experience you won't soon forget. go to Wieliczka Salt Mine. If you have time, visit the Eagle-nest Castles. Eagle-nest Castles is a chain of medieval strongholds picturesquely elevated over the utterly scenic landscape of the rolling Kraków-Czestochowa Upland graced with profusion of fancy limestone rocks, gorges, cavities, etc. King Casimir III the Great (1333-1370) erected most of the once formidable fortresses to protect what was Poland's western frontier, at the time perilously close to the country's capital city, Kraków. Later on the king's castles passed into the hands of various aristocratic families, together with the adjacent land. New owners usually did their best to adapt the medieval fortresses as stately manor-houses and family nests through successive overhaul, expansion, refurbishment, renovation, etc. without compromising the defenses as long as possible. Nonetheless eventually the proud eagle-nest castles largely turned into picturesque ruins over the centuries. Eagle Nests' Route, connecting several of the most interesting strongholds, starts in Kraków and has its end in Czestochowa. Sturdy hikers can cover the distance of 164 km following signs — a red horizontal bar sandwiched between two white ones — painted on tree trunks, telephone poles, pylons, etc., beginning at Kraków's os. Trzydziestolecia residential area, namely by its bus station. Motorists should best drive first 24 km to the Ojcow National Park where two nearest eagle-nest castles are, then to the Rabsztyn, Pilica, Ogrodzieniec, Mirow, Bobolice, and Olsztyn Castles. Mirow and Bobolice Castles, twin strongholds connected by a ridge, lie 1.5 km from each other. The former was first a wooden fort, turned into a Gothic fortress in the 14th c., turned a manor-house in the 16th c., abandoned by 1787. The latter was knights-robbers' hideout first, next the 14th-century king's frontier fort, then an aristocratic manor between 1500 and 1661 when deserted. .

If you say cheap I imagine Poland,Bosnia and Slovakia. Slovakia and Poland share beautiful Tatra Mountains.Zakopane in Poland is a very popular place and you can easily travel to Slovakia as well. http://travel.spectator.sk/articles/38/ http://www.zakopane-life.com/ http://www.mountainparadise.co.uk/ Keep in mind that Slovakia is a mountainous country so Bosnia is. http://www.discoverbosnia.com/bosnia-skiing http://www.enjoybosnia.com/page-al-Planine.html

I lived in Riga (Latvia) for a few years. Flights are very cheap with Ryanair and you should have snow in Feb. There are plenty of hotel and hostel options and although much nicer in Spring, you could have a nice weekend break in Winter.

Have a look at some of resorts in Bulgaria, you should be able to get a cheap package obviously avoid the Euro Zone if you can with the pound being so weak currently. Have a good trip where ever you end up.

Go to Slovakia,Poland or Ukraine. I live in Czech republic and we dont exactly have a snowy winter.
