How much would we need to save to travel Europe/America?
-
My girlfriend and I are planning on visiting a few places in each country over 6 months after year 12. We're planning on staying in a few places for a while, working and renting. How much do you think we need to save prior to this? I was thinking around the $7000 mark (AUD) oh, and each.

Answer:
If you plan to work as well, if you can get the jobs that is, that amount should be OK, obviously you need to say in hostels. You can live cheaper in USA, food wise.

Hi I take it you will both under 25 as this will entitle you to travel on whats known as the inter rail very cheap and will allow you to travel all over europe. As for Your savings that sound o.k to tide you over until you get work it really depend on how much you want to party while you are away as well. Good luck have a good trip.

To get an estimate, make a list of places of interest you definitely want to see during your trip, then calculate: Cost of airplane ticket to your first destination + Cost of transportation between European countries if you plan to visit more than 1 + Cost of airplane ticket from Europe to USA + Cost of ticket back home + Cost of visa to enter each country (where applicable) + Cost or working visa and permits for each country (unless the employer agreed to pay them) + Cost of accommodation + Cost of transportation from your hotel/rental place to places of interest to see + Admission to these places where applicable (usually can be found on their web sites)+ Cost of food (depending if you plan to cook 15-20 UDS daily or eat up - this can add up quite a bit) + Cost of travelers insurance + Cost of phone calls home + Cost of souvenirs and gifts for yourselves, family and friends ______________________________________… This gives you basic expenses for the trip Now think of your income How many hours is your visa allowing you to work a week? How many hours are you willing to work a week? How much money did the employer agreed to pay you a week? (I would strongly suggest you pre-arrange your employment opportunities. The economy is not thriving as it was few years back and all open positions are fought for. Plus it will give you an idea of how much money you can count on coming in). Subtract the income from your expenses. Once you know the difference add 15-20% to that amount for emergencies, change of plans, etc. This is how much money you should have at least before you set out for your adventure. I would also make sure to have good medical and dental insurance that covers emergencies abroad as those could easily eat up a huge hole in your budget. I had to have wisdom tooth extracted in US, ended up paying $450.00 - ouch.
