I've looked on plenty of Finland education sites and most of them either talk about apartments or touch a little bit on dorm life. what are Finnish dorms like (lifestyle, rules, tenants, etc.) if you can provide a decent, reliable, and quotable source, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do so. Thank you.

Answer:
Finnish universities do not have dorms (in the sense of dorms in American colleges at least). There are apartments specifically rented for students (each large city has at least one company that handles such apartments), but they are not on-campus. These apartments are generally divided into single resident and shared apartments. Single resident apartments (smallish studio apartments) are usually in great demand and students have to be on waiting lists for years. Shared apartments are usually easy to obtain (and the rents are lower than the studios), as long as one isn’t too picky about the location (naturally apartments closer to the school are more popular, and more expensive). In a shared apartment, one gets his/her own bedroom and shares the kitchen, bathroom, toilet etc. with his/her flatmates (who are usually people of the same gender). The overall condition of student apartments is good (the student housing companies have their own maintenance crews), but whether or not they’re clean depends on the residents. Most apartments are unfurnished and the limited amount of furnished apartments are generally given to exchange students. There are also “family apartments” which are rented to people with established relationships (married/encaged/common-law married/ domestic partnerships etc.) and/or children. Of course, there are also plenty of students who rent apartments from private individuals, when they’re not happy with the available selections of “official student apartments”. The student apartments do have rules (discouraging loud partying and other disruptive behaviour), but just how strictly they’re enforced depends largely on the residents. Finnish students receive student benefits from the government and part of that benefit is meant for paying rent (there’s a system, but I won’t get into it). Student dorms are usually messy and quite small, the students share some of the rooms (bathroom, kitchen) but usually the bedrooms are private. However, there are usually no mixed gender flats to be shared, they are either female or male-only things. Many do have complained of their roommates though; too may times they are noisy as too may students tend to drink a lot and party until late at night so not for the faint-hearted!

As far as I know people mostly rent apartments with their student benefit. Since it's expensive and you might not find an inexpensive one, students take flatmates. This of course means you live like you would normally unless you're sharing an apartment. Then you might share a bathroom and a kitchen. There are apartment buildings provided by student organizations which means you can live among other students, but usually with the general population. I don't believe there are dormitories like the ones in America. Rules are pretty lax and there's no segregation.

Can't speak form personal experience, but I have heard for the most part they are nice. Cheapish for the most part. Just whatever you do do not say "mustanainen" (not sure if that's the exact spelling). But it means gypsy and you will be arrested just for saying it.
