Where is the cheapest place in Europe to fly into (from the US?

What is the cheapest place and/or way to fly to/from Europe?

  • I want to fly to a country in Europe (a one-way ticket) and take it from there. I would like to take the rail to Dublin, Edinburgh, London, Wuppertal, Berlin, Warsaw, Wroclaw. Also Italy and Spain. I would plan this all as I go, booking train fare, etc. I would like the airfare to be the cheapest, to Europe and back to the States. I know of a friend who did the same and then just went to the airport and waited for a seat to fly back home, but this was a few years back, is this still possible now? I don't care for posh accommodations and don't mind roughing it - I'm basically trying to find the cheapest way to get there. I will have friends traveling with me. Thanks to all in advance. Yes, I do plan to purchase Europe on a shoestring budget..

  • Answer:

Your cheapest flight (absent some special deal) is almost always going to be New York to London. You can get flights to London for not too much more from Chicago and maybe a couple of other eastern cities. I see that there are great prices to Ireland right now and you may be able to find deals to other European cities as well. There is a website (www.vayama.com) that specializes in international flights, and you can find some spectacular deals on there. I flew to Rome roundtrip for about $400 out of Miami by booking there. Just be aware that once you book, you will not be able to make changes to your flight. FYI, Europe is tough to do on a budget right now because the dollar is worthless against the Euro. I got back a few weeks ago, and it was common to pay ten dollars for a McDonalds value meal.

Flying standby with friends is difficult, as only one or two of you may be accommodated, if any at all. There are fewer and fewer seats available because airlines are really limiting flights lately. The best advice is to book several months in advance. You can check several fares at once by visiting www.farecompare.com, which pulls up several travel Web sites and lets you compare between them, including Expedia and Travelocity. generally the cheapest fares to Europe are into London, Amsterdam and Frankfurt, but that can change. Fares change all the time, including several times a day sometimes. And then the airlines wonder why travelers are demanding a Passenger Bill of Rights.

If possible, try target Frankfurt.. flying to London and Amsterdam may be as cheap but not very convenient esp if you're going to be touring Southern Europe. Best bet is to also get a Eurail pass and use it to hop onto the trains at the Frankfurt station..

go to BookMe. You can compare prices on all the major travel sites from one location. It's the only way you can guarantee the cheapest prices online.
