What is the cheapest why to travel to venice from Siena?

Rome to Venice with "Ecxess baggage"- Travel options?

  • Hi, Our family just booked a Europe cruise for our parents. It ends in Rome. From there we are trying to get them to a small town of my father's ancestry outside of Venice, (Rauscedo) Air travel has very restrictive baggage allownces on such domestic flghts of usually around 30kg total and only a few bags. Since their cruise is long and they are older, they will have a lot of baggage, prob at least 2-3 med to large suitcases each and a max weight of between 20 to 50 lbs( 9-22 kgs?)each. I cannot seem to find a domsetic flight that would let them take anywhere near that much baggage. Even if they were able to cut that down a bit it would still be way over the limits and/or very expensive. What are their choices? I cannot find any information on baggage restrictions for train travel. Will they have the same issue if going by train? Any recommendations / options for travel ( other than telling them not to take so much stuff ) would be very much appreciated!

  • Answer:

For train travel there are mostly no limits other than that you have to be able to get your luggage aboard yourself, and a sensible amount limit. This is the page of the Italian rail planner, also has links to other information: http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html I found the internal link to the luggage page, and it seems that you are indeed allowed to take as much as you want as long as you do not hinder other travelers. That would be one big or two medium suitcases, I assume. http://www.trenitalia.com/en/area_clienti/con_trasp/viaggio10.html#IL%20TRASPORTO%20DEI%20BAGAGLI You will have to check whether it also goes for the high speed trains, as they have slightly different rules often. Travel time Rome to Venice is less than 6 hours, so travel by train might even be faster than by plane, when you look at the total travel time, like going to the airport and check-in times. I would advice to take no more than 2 cases each, as it is very awkward to travel with more than 2 cases, and with that they will have to ask for help often enough.

The question is where do you go from Venice? If you go back to Rome, then you may want to leave some of the luggage in Rome in your hotel (that's quite save). If you go on from there Train may be a good solution. You also could rent a car. But i have to say it REALLY depends of your further travel plans. If your are able to cut down your luggage have a look at Ryan air they have really cheap flights but only 15Kg allowance, but on the other hand if you book a car form the destination airport you get 20% off.
