Which city is more Americanized: Paris or Dublin?

  • I am planning on spending the summer (up to 3 months) in either Paris or Dublin. While I won't be attending a university, I am a college student, and would like to live in a youthful area. I have lived in Manhattan, New York City for 4 months, and I love it, but I want to live in the city that's least like New York City to experience a greater range of cultures. Out of Paris, France or Dublin, Ireland, I would like to visit the city that retains more of its culture overall, and has been less influenced by the United States. I know that Paris has a ton of culture, but it also has a lot of American features. So, overall, I'm trying to choose the city with the least amount of Americanization, and that has a strong culture, but I've never been to either city. Costs, visas, and language barriers are not an issue.

    Neither is really Americanized. Tourist areas in any city can seem "American", but get away from this and both cities have a lot to offer. I would say Dublin is least like New York, but mostly because it is a smaller city with a very specific atmosphere, not because it is less American. Paris holds similarities to any other huge metropolitan area in the world. I honestly can't recommend one city over the other, I love them both and think both would make a worthwhile experience. Choose the city based on other criteria, then just avoid tourist hotspots. You will have an incredible experience no matter what. And regardless of what others say, I've always found Parisians very accommodating and friendly. The dirtiness of the city is part of the charm.

I would definitely choose Paris, but that's just me. I've never been but always has an interest in France. I also adore the language and I am learning it at school. It seems like a really friendly place to go too.

The Irish are very welcoming people. I hate to say it (hope I don't cause offence to anyone) but the French are sometimes very rude. The only downside to coming to Dublin, is that we are in the middle of a recession so everything is very expensive and it is really hard to get a job. Dublin does have an extremely strong culture. There is always 'buskers' on Grafton Street (main shopping street in town) Language barriers will not be an issue. Although the native language of Ireland is Gaeilge, everyone here speaks English. The road signs and other signs are in Gaeilge but they do have english written underneath. We do have a lot of American shops here too. Transport is easy and relatively cheap- and even better for you because some transport (like buses and luas) do deals for Students. If I was in your position to pick either Dublin or Paris I would probably pick Paris though. Over the last few years, Dublin has become fairly Americanized with shops and other things. I have only been to Paris once but that was a few years ago so it might have changed. Hope this could have been of help to you :)

If you avoid American tourists, neither city is like New York. People who can pick either city as resembling the USA in any significant way obviously have not been in either city. If I were you I would definitely go to Paris, no doubt about it. Dublin is nice in its own way, like any other city in Europe, but it does not come close to Paris.
