What do you guys think of when you hear the country Romania?

Dracula. That is the first thing. Second thing was that the region was settled by Romans, and so the language is a lot like Italian (with a Slavic accent). Third thing is that they made some terrible political mistakes in WWII. Which cost them. Forth I have a friend from there (who pretends not to hate me for my first answer.) Dracula is both the fictional vampire and the real count Dracula who was famous for stopping he advance of the Turks into Europe, and infamous for his horrible ruthless binges. He was a hero and a terror. Really dominates Romanian history from an outsiders view.

My husband is Romanian

Home (for me). And Dracula was not a count. And he was not vampire. By the way: I prefer O I (not so salted) and universal...donor. Now, seriously: Romania makes me think about the Bran Castle (Dracula's Castle - if you like this name better), the Danube Delta, painted egg on Easter, MARTISOARE on every 1st of March, splendid folk music and dances and... masks, sarmale cu mamaliga (pork meat-balls, rolled in cabbage leaves, boiled in tomato-juice, served HOT with polenta and sour cream), summer on the Black Sea coast (Mamaia, Constantza), winter in Carpathians Mountains (Brashov, Sinaia, ...). and the list could go on and on ....
